As the Education Coordinator at the Satellite Prison Camp at FCI Estill, I was responsible for the overall orderly operation of education programs for approximately 300 adult male inmates.  My duties included, but were not limited to the following education objectives, but always with the security and safety of employees and inmates as the absolute first priority:

  • Monitor and audit education programs for policy compliance on an ongoing basis.  Serve as Reviewer-in-Charge for formal audits and operational reviews.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and policies and procedures to maintain order among students.
  • Teach socially acceptable behavior, employing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement.
  • Modify the general education curriculum for special-needs students, based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies.
  • Develop and implement strategies to meet the needs of students with a variety of security concerns in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Meet with other professionals to discuss individual students' needs and progress.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to evaluate students' progress.
  • Guide and counsel students with adjustment or academic problems, or special academic interests.  Set education goals to complement goals established by case management for long- and short-term behavior modification.
  • Teach personal development skills such as goal setting, independence, and self-advocacy.  Emphasis on release-readiness, to include preparation of resumes and job-search skills.
  • Instruct through lectures, discussions, and demonstrations in one or more subjects, such as English, mathematics, or social studies.
  • Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to students.
  • Prepare for assigned classes and show written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisors.
  • Instruct students in daily living skills required for independent maintenance and self-sufficiency, such as hygiene, safety, and food preparation.
  • Prepare objectives and outlines for courses of study, following curriculum guidelines or requirements of states and schools.
  • Confer with other staff members to plan and schedule lessons promoting learning, following approved curricula.

    As a Correctional Treatment Specialist, or case manager, I was responsible for the overall case management work for approximately 170 male inmates in a medium security federal prison.  I have extensive knowledge of Bureau of Prisons policy and procedures, as well as the application to the inmate population.  My duties included the following specific duties:

    *prepare written correspondence for executive staff signatures to members of Congress, U.S. Parole Commission, creditors, judges, probation officers, inmate family members, and general public.

    *conduct exhaustive research to insure accuracy of data reported and the correctness in the application of policy.

    *ensure compliance with the Privacy Act and Freedom of Information Act.

    As a collateral duty, I held the position of Institution Parole Coordinator for 9 years.  I served as the liaison between staff at the institution and the U.S. Parole Commission.  I coordinated the hearings via teleconference for those inmates who were eligible to be considered for parole.

    Other duties included the following:

    *serve in acting capacity for the unit manager or the case management coordinator;

    *make decisions regarding application of policy to the Victim Witness Program and the WITSEC (witness security) Programs;

    I also have extensive training in firearms proficiency, self-defense, and management of medical and hostage situations.
