Long-Term Substitute Feb 2011Apr 2011 Newport City Elementary School Newport City , VT I held the position of a Para-educator in a 5th grade classroom for six weeks. I worked with two students who required additional assistance both academically and behaviorally.

  • Engage NY - I have observed and instructed with this Common Core Standards based program for mathematics.
  • PNOA assessment - I have administered the PNOA assessment to kindergarten, first, and second grade students.
  • Reading Recovery - I have been to a behind the glass observation during a reading recovery lesson.
  • Responsive Classroom - I have observed the responsive classroom model in many of the classrooms that I have visited during fieldwork placements.
  • Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) - The Charleston Elementary school follows this model.
  • Multi Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) / Response to Intervention (RTI) - I have become familiar with RTI and MTSS models and the goals associated with them.   
  • Won Way Phonics - I have observed and instructed this phonics program.
  • Special Education -  During my coursework an inclusive practices course  has familiarized me with special education practices, laws, and regulations and how to teach to a diverse group of learners.
  • Universal Design for Learners(UDL) - Johnson State College requires that we use the Universal Design for Learners model while planning and teaching a lesson.
  • Multiple Intelligences - In order to teach to a diverse group of students an educator has to be aware of multiple intelligences and how to teach to them.
  • Habits of Mind - We are educating students for jobs that do not exist yet, however if we can teach using the Habits of Mind model students will be prepared for any career or situation as an adult.
  • Additional Experiences/skills:
  • I have gained experienced in various short-term substitute situations - 1st/2nd grade class (1/2 day), preschool class (2 days), special educator (full-day), and kindergarten (1 hour).  
  • I have worked with various committees at the Holland Elementary school that include the planning and safety committee and have participated in the revision of the mission statement and the school handbook alongside the principal.
