Experience
03/2010 to Present
Executive Director, Science Advisor to the Ocean Protection Council Ocean Science Trust - Oakland, CA
Strategically built and positioned unique organization to durably provide technical and scientific expertise in support of sustainable marine resource management. Led the Ocean Science Trust to the vanguard of the science-to-policy interface, promoting innovative uses of technology, tools and knowledge systems to advance the robustness of ocean stewardship, as well as transparent, informed decision-making in general. Grew organizational capacity, attracted funding from across stakeholder spectrum, directed strategic deployment of those funds, identified and funded meritorious external programs in advancement of collective mission. Secured OST's future and thereby the role of science in informing ocean policy and management decisions. Built and demonstrated relevance of OST (and 'boundary organizations' generally) which now scales up the coast into Canada and is being replicated in other states, and built meaningful and durable partnerships with regional and federal partners. As Ocean Protection Council Science Advisor, represent academic community and best available science in support of ocean and coastal policy and management decisions, including state funding decisions. Deploy the gravitas of this team to provide momentum and trajectory in policy decisions. Liaise and strategize with federal partners, especially on climate adaptation, fisheries management and ocean acidification.
02/2005 to 03/2010
Assistant Director University of California, Davis, Bodega Marine Laboratory - Bodega Bay, CA
Simultaneously led development and strategic positioning of state-of-the-art facility while responsible for operations ranging from physical plant, marine operations, information technology, ocean observing, housing, public education and aquatic resources. Successfully re-organized internally for efficiency across sectors while building durable partnerships with state and federal agencies. Attracted competitive funding and donor support, organized faculty around issue areas and promoted the development of advisory board on which I later served; the board secured ongoing core funding from UC Davis campus by positioning Bodega Marine Laboratories as flagship to new campus-wide Coastal and Marine Science Institute, a novel multi-departmental construct that encircles faculty from across disciplines in support of societal issues from Sierra to sea.
03/2001 to 02/2005
Marine Operations Manager University of California, Davis, Bodega Marine Laboratories - Bodega Bay, CA
Built a viable marine operations program to serve as the ultimate outpost for coastal and field science on the north central California coast. Identified offshore research needs of system-wide UC and CSU faculty, state and federal partners, and identified, sourced and helped design state-of-the-art research vessel to serve as a versatile platform and mobile sensor for research and teaching. Parlayed $200K capital investment into $1M+ research vessel. Sourced funding and deployed ocean observing system, including first pH sensor on offshore oceanographic mooring on west coast, and merged this system - including offshore moorings, shore sensors from SF Bay to Pt. Arena, and terrestrial sensors - into west-coast wide program. Built a business plan and hired and trained staff to support program, and actively and productively pursued engagement from throughout the academic and decision-making community.
03/1990 to 03/2001
Research Associate University of South Alabama, State University of New York, Stony Brook, Moss Landing Marine Labs - Mobile, Stony Brook, Moss Landing
Throughout the '90's I worked in marine laboratories and universities from the 3 US coasts, positions I took as we moved in support of my husband's career as marine ecologist faculty. At the University of South Alabama I directed a team of 6 pre- and post-doctoral students to develop a program to understand the age and growth of Gulf of Mexico reef fishes targeted by both commercial and recreational fishermen. I attracted competitive funding to support this program, and I traveled throughout the Gulf to speak publicly to fishing groups and others on the value of collaboration with scientists to co-generate results that would inform management. At Stony Brook I worked alongside my husband to understand the role of behavior of larval crustaceans in determining their dispersal, work that included inshore and offshore sampling, experimental design and project management. I also undertook field training for school teachers to support marine science curricula in public schools. In Moss Landing, where my husband was a visiting professor, I led a team to identify the habitat use of endangered reptiles. Each of these positions provided me the opportunity to grow a team and program and leave it standing when I departed, and I also learned about the marine policy and cultural issues that challenged the different coastal regions of the US.
