Emergency Room Nurse May 2012Nov 2013 Carondelet St. Mary's Hospital Tucson, AZ Assessment: Perform focused assessment of patients, triage of incoming patients, take patient history, obtain vital signs, and chart electronically.
Diagnosis: Interpret the patient's conditionsusing information gathered during initial assessment, lab results, and collaboration with the physician, combined with critical thinking and patient care experience.
Planning: Order appropriate test within practice guidelines and hospital policies, coordinate patient care, and provide treatment with time efficacy to ensure timely patient discharge or admittance to unit.  
Intervention/Implementation: Start IV's, collect labs, administer medications, follow physicians' orders, advocate for the patient, provide pain relief, furnish emotional support, administer blood and blood products, monitor vital signs, assist physicians during procedures, assist physicians with conscious sedation procedures, and provide wound care. The ER requires a wide range of individualized interventions form eye irrigation to prepping patients for surgery, and utilizing any opportunity to educate the patient.     
Evaluation: Chart patient care, monitor patient's response to treatment and pain relief, provide patient education and health promotion, and discuss discharge instructions. 
Other nursing tasks include but are not limited to: Supervision and teaching of new nurses, maintain continuing education requirements, maintain certifications for CPR, PALS, and ACLS.
Work in the critical care area within the ER required specialized procedures that included but was not limited to providing care using Sepsis protocol, Diabetic Acidosis protocol, Stoke protocol, STEMI protocol, Hypothermic protocol, titration of cardiac medication to control heart rate per protocol, titration of medications to maintain blood pressure per protocol, participating as a team member during Code situations, assisting the physician during intubation of patients, sedate patients per protocol while intubated, sedating aggressive patients, monitoring patient restraints, monitor patient during ambulance transfer to another hospital, and provide assistance to co-workers when needed.

Planning: Treatment plan based on patient condition, coordinate patient care with ancillary departments and procedures, work with case management in preparation for patient discharge, and education of the patient on wound care, medical diagnosis, and medications.
Intervention/Implementation:  Chart patient care, administer pain relief and medications, start IVs, maintain IV infusions, call physician for new orders when necessary,monitor PCA use, assist patients in personal hygiene, assist patients to bathroom, keep patient room clean, protect patients from falls, monitor restraint use, prepare patients for surgery, monitor and remove drains, apply CPM for patient use, change dressings, prepare patient for physical therapy and pool therapy, and educate patient.  
Evaluate: Assess the patient's response to treatment and pain control. Ensure patient was informed and ready for discharge. 
Other floor nursing duties included:  Participation in staff meetings, staying current on continuing education, keeping certifications current, and holding a position in the Unit Based Council.
